Lt Col Richard Sanders, Commander

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Sanders is the Department Chair of Aerospace Studies, and the Commander of Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC), Detachment 592 at University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is the director for all unit functions, representative to the Senior Faculty Council at UNC  Charlotte, liaison to the region’s 24 servicing crosstown schools and the course director for all academic content within the department. He serves as the primary AS200 and AS400 Instructor, and provides commissioning officer preparation for our senior cadets. Lt Col Sanders also serves as the liaison for the Civil Air Patrol and the university scholarship program.

Lt Col Sanders graduated from Michigan Technological University in 1992 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He was commissioned in 1993 through Officer Training School.  He earned an M.S. in Management from Troy State University in 1997 and an M.A. in Administrative Sciences— Organizational Management from The George Washington University in 2000.  He has served in various Civil Engineer assignments at bases in the US and overseas, including Japan, South Korea, and Hawaii.  Additionally, he deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 and worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers providing construction management for both Coalition and Afghan forces.  He commanded the 628th Civil Engineer Squadron at Joint Base Charleston, SC, and most recently was assigned to HQ US Southern Command in Miami, FL.
